Beyond the Scale: Don’t ignore your gut

Looking around our oval conference table, I observed the participants and professionals engaged in lively conversation with the occasional burst of laughter punctuating the air.

Yes, I thought, we have gone from being a disparate collection of individuals to a group with a common purpose. after nine weeks of getting together Wednesday nights at the Serendipity Racquet Club in Sarasota, an easy playful banter has replaced the uncomfortable silences and guarded behavior that marked some of our earlier sessions. yes, we have bonded.

And it couldn’t have come at a better time given that one of the topics up for discussion was gut health, or as someone so delicately put it: “People who can’t poop.” if my paternal grandmother were alive, she would be mortified. But the way Americans pop antacids and laxatives like candy, it probably is a subject worth airing.

Now, I think most people know this, but if you’ve been living under a rock it may come as a surprise to you that there are bacteria living in your gut. Yep, in fact, according to our dietitian Ariel Robarge, there are 10 times more bacterial cells in our bodies than human cells. not to worry, though, they come in peace and are what is known as “friendly” or “good” bacteria, and they can be beneficial to your health.

“Friendly bacteria are vital to proper development of the immune system, to protection against microorganisms that could cause disease, and to the digestion and absorption of food and nutrients,” according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine site.

Beyond the physical, good bacteria have also been shown to improve your mood. the majority of serotonin, known as the happiness hormone, is produced in the gut, not the brain.

So even though the thought of having bacteria take up permanent residence in our bodies, even if it’s the good variety, is really icky, how can we use this information to improve our overall health?

First, it’s important to know that everyone’s mix of bacteria is different. Think about it, your own personal, customized batch of bacteria. For maximum gut health, it’s essential for us to maintain the proper balance of bacteria, which can be thrown off by taking antibiotics — indiscriminate killers of bacteria, taking out the good with the bad — and by “unfriendly” microorganisms, such as bacteria, yeasts, fungi and parasites, according to NCAM.

That’s where probiotics come in. Probiotics, as defined by the World Health Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, are “live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” they can be found in supplements and food, especially fermented foods like kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, cheese, tempeh, miso, natto, fermented fish, yogurt and kombucha (see sidebar). People have been consuming fermented foods for thousands of years; every culture seems to have its favorite.

Our dietitian Ariel suggested a couple of products that I’ve especially grown to like. Plain, 2 percent Greek yogurt topped with berries and slivered almonds makes a delicious and nutritious breakfast. And I’ve concocted my own smoothie using 8 ounces of kefir, a splash of pineapple juice, some strawberries and a scoop of protein powder. I’m still trying to get used to the flavored protein powder and would prefer plain, but it’s a simple and healthy way to start the day.

Admittedly, there’s still a lot to be learned about how probiotics work and how effective they are in treating illness, but it’s a fascinating — although still icky — subject.

Rogue of the Week: Charlie Sheen – iamROGUE.com

While America remains embroiled in no less than two wars, and as a serious political upheaval continues in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Pakistan, and the Ivory Coast, our national attention this week has unfailingly focused on a bad boy, sitcom star who lives with a pornographic actress and a former nanny, whom he lovingly refers to as his “goddesses.”

The fact that Sheen has completely dominated the public discourse is not only a testament to the competency and standards of televised journalism, but also to Sheen’s particular brand of crazy.  the man — born Carlos Estevez — dispenses peculiar non-sequiturs seemingly designed for internet meme-dom; his maniacal words – evidenced by now ubiquitous phrases like #tiger blood, #winning, and #plan better  – have a certain irresistibly.

When asked during his immediately infamous 20/20 interview, what exactly he meant when he referred to himself as a, “High Priest Vatican Assassin Warlock,” Sheen responded, “I don’t know.  All those words just sound cool together.”  he elaborated briefly, saying, “Stuff just comes out and it’s entertaining and it’s fun and it sounds different than all the other garbage people are spewing, you know?” and seriously, why not?

We’re all familiar with celebrity train wrecks by now (i.e. Lindsay Lohan, Brittany Spears, Mel Gibson – should we go on?), but Sheen seems to be having fun with it, making it almost “sound cool.”  and in a culture of constant PR obfuscation, his honesty is, to an ungodly number of folks, as refreshing as it is totally, 101 percent rogue.

quick note: a noted firearm enthusiast, Sheen once accidentally shot his fiancée Kelly Preston in the arm, causing her to flee into the nonthreatening arms of future husband John Travolta.  No, really.

The increasingly haggard actor’s utterly unapologetic stance on his history, lifestyle, and self-adulation make Charlie Sheen easily the most knavish of any Rogue of the Week, but this is one entry for which we, as consumers of information, all deserve a share of the credit or blame, to put it more accurately.

Slam Bolt Scrappers Review – PlayStation 3 Games – CNET Reviews

Most of the levels in Slam Bolt Scrappers follow this pattern, but most levels feature their own quirks, such as platforms that descend into lava when your stack gets too heavy or towers that periodically switch positions onscreen. The only exceptions are the boss levels, which invariably require you to bash in the boss’s defense mechanism so your tower’s missiles can knock it into submission. When combined with the acts of defending against your opponent, battling your enemies, and building your towers (particularly on the more challenging ranks of the game’s four difficulty settings), these little changes turn the already-hectic gameplay into a heart-pounding experience. as a result, it’s best to play the campaign cooperatively with up to three of your friends because the towers go up faster, the addition of more players adds to the game’s excitement, and you have a better chance of beating your previous record time for completing a level.

Needless to say, there’s a lot going on in the campaign alone; so much, in fact, that the game’s psychedelic color palette and wild, cartoonish visuals sometimes leave you hunting for your avatar in the uproar. Even when you do manage to find yourself, the constant beatings you receive from opponents and the creatures above make the act of dropping your blocks in the right places a frustrating combination of luck and skill. The good news is that all of this eventually makes some sort of chaotic sense; the bad news is that the short campaign concludes just as you’ve gotten the hang of it. If you miss some of the unlockable bonus levels scattered throughout the smallish world map, you can finish the campaign in only a few hours even on the harder settings.

Finding your avatar amid all the explosions and enemies occasionally feels like a game of Where’s Waldo?

Yet, Slam Bolt Scrappers provides plenty of opportunities for replay through its multiplayer Battle mode. Here, you can play in teams or singly against up to three other players at once based on parameters set before the match. These are largely based on maps, as well as avatar and weapon options you unlock by completing levels in the campaign. The team option is particularly welcome because your towers rise much more quickly with the help of a seasoned partner. Although playing against one or even two other players feels much like the campaign mode, tossing in the fourth player suddenly turns the map into a relentless spectacle of flying missiles, careening drill bits, and unexpected explosions that makes it easy to lose track of what’s going on. The free-for-all Mardis Gras spectacle is fun to watch, but playing at this level requires an intimate understanding of the game’s mechanics that casual visitors simply won’t have. this wouldn’t be a bad thing if the multiplayer mode weren’t limited to local play. Given a decent online multiplayer mode, Slam Bolt Scrappers could have provided many hours of nonstop multiplayer entertainment. as it stands, however, playing “with a large group of people who are yelling at each other and the TV” (as one of the loading screens suggests) isn’t much fun unless all four of you have conquered the game’s steep learning curve.

Slam Bolt Scrappers can entertain in spite of its flaws, but the absence of online multiplayer means that its replayability depends on having a few enthusiastic friends and controllers on hand to make the most of its cooperative and versus options. If you’re willing to overlook this fundamental weakness (and some curiously long loading times), it’s hard not to admire Slam Bolt Scrappers for its skillful handling of scraps from multiple popular genres.

Little-known Jewish ritual causes flight concern

Copyright ©2010. The Associated Press. Produced by NewsOK.com All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

when I’m on an airplane, I’m busy praying that I make it to my next destination alive and in one piece, and counting my blessings that my perpetually junky purse made it through security without me having to dump everything out.

these days, in the aftermath of 9/11, many people are very concerned and suspicious about what other passengers may be doing on airplanes, particularly when it comes to religion. So I wasn’t surprised to learn that a prayer ritual caused quite a stir on a flight during the March 13 weekend. Men participating in the Orthodox Jewish prayer tradition of tefillin caused a security alert to be issued during an Alaska Airlines flight from Mexico City to Los Angeles, according to a recent report from The Associated Press.at first I heard sketchy bits of information about the ritual — men praying aloud in a non-English language and strapping small boxes to their bodies with what appeared to be tape or wires. I immediately knew what it was, but I also knew that most non-Jews don’t know much about the tefillin prayer ritual because it isn’t one of the major Jewish holidays the media regularly reports about. The Associated Press reported that the flight crew on Alaska Airlines Flight 241 grew alarmed when three Mexican men began conducting a ritual tying leather straps and small wooden boxes to their bodies. The crew alerted the cockpit, which subsequently was placed on a security lockdown for the rest of the flight. FBI and custom agents plus police and fire trucks met the plane at the gate at Los Angeles International Airport, and the men conducting the ritual were escorted off. They were released without being arrested, and airline officials later learned from law enforcement that the men were performing the ritual of tefillin.I learned about tefillin in 2008 and wrote a story about it in The Oklahoman. at that time, Emanuel Synagogue, 900 NW 47, participated in an international program called World Wide Wrap Day to educate the Oklahoma City congregation about the custom of tefillin. The synagogue’s rabbi at that time, Rabbi Russell Fox, said he hoped to encourage more congregation members to recommit to the practice.According to Jewishvirtuallibrary.org, tefillin are two small black boxes with black straps attached to them. Fox told me the boxes contain tiny parchment scrolls with Scriptures from Exodus and Deuteronomy written on them, including the verse on which the custom is based.Fox said tefillin is based on God’s commandment in Deuteronomy 6:5-8:“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.“And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thy eyes.”Fox said for generations, Jewish men have been required to place one box on their head and tie the other one on their arm, wrapping them on with slender straps each weekday morning as they say their morning prayers, typically in Hebrew. Fox told me the significance of the tefillin ritual is that it serves as a physical reminder of a person’s loving relationship with God.I hope The Oklahoman has helped educate readers on some of the more obscure or lesser-known traditions observed by different faith communities. I know I have learned a lot about other faith traditions, besides my own Christian faith, plus I’ve discovered much more about my own faith community as well.As for the rest of the story, Alaska Airlines apologized to the men who conducted the prayer ritual for their experience after landing. The airline also apologized for any inconvenience the experience caused other passengers. The airline, in a statement made by spokeswoman Bobbie Egan, said it plans to update its awareness training on Orthodox Jews.A spokeswoman for the Anti-Defamation League said this issue comes up occasionally. she said a similar incident last year resulted in the league and Chabad-Lubavitch, an Orthodox Jewish movement, sending a letter and a flier to major airlines explaining tefillin.CNN reported that members of the flight crew said they grew concerned when the men got up from their seats and retrieved the black boxes from overhead compartments after passengers were asked to stay buckled in their seats, then conducted the ritual.Deborah Lauter, the Anti-Defamation League’s director of civil rights, told CNN that both parties have responsibilities in such a situation.“The safety of passengers is paramount, and in this age of heightened security, people are on edge. I think it’s understandable why people would have this reaction. there has to be a give-and-take, too, with the passengers. if they weren’t cooperating, that’s a different problem than religious sensitivity,” Lauter told CNN.“Education is a two-way street. We hope airlines will include this training with their staffs. It also wouldn’t hurt for passengers who are going to be participating in this ritual to alert the staff ahead of time.” News Photo Galleriesview all

Will any Georgia team ever break the all-sports record by Walton High School?

There’s no more controversy about which Georgia high school team holds the all-sports record for consecutive wins.

The distinction belongs to the Walton girls tennis program.

The Cobb County dynasty has posted 139 consecutive wins, including Thursday’s match against Wheeler to end the regular season. Walton will make it to no. 145 if it wins next month’s state championship, as expected, for the eighth year in a row. The streak dates to the 2004 season.

“I think the most important part about the streak is that we’re in the record books for it now. It’s tangible evidence of what we’ve accomplished,” Walton coach Roberta Manheim said.

“you can say you’ve won seven straight championships, but Walton has had a successful program for years and years [winning a total of 14 GHSA state championships]. There are lots of successful programs and there are always state champions.

“but this is in the record books, something we can look at it and really see what we’ve accomplished.”

Walton thought it had tied the hallowed record with last year’s narrow 3-2 win over Centennial for the Class AAAAA title. it was no. 133, which broke the mark set by the Taylor County girls basketball team from 1968-72, according to Taylor County’s website.

However, the National High School Federation’s record book had Taylor County’s record at 134. With the conflicting reports, Walton zeroed in on a new number at the start of this season.

“clearly there was a focus for us, or in the back of our minds, to get to 135 to say ‘OK, we have officially done it,’” Manheim acknowledged. “Yes, it was definitely something we thought about. Once we hit that number, however, we got back to the frame of mind where we’ve been the last eight years. We just want to win the match in front of us.”

Ruth Taber: Roasted seaweed chips among my favorites at Frisco food show

I just returned from my semi-annual nosh (nibble or snack) meeting — the winter NASFT show (National Association Specialty Food Trade) in San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

Sampling new foods among the 80,000 products presented by more than 1,300 vendors is hard work. (No tears, please.)

A few goodies were “gotta have some more.” Most foods were variations on theme — new flavors, shapes for chips, chocolates, vinegars and oils, for example.

The upbeat atmosphere among vendors and buyers was noticeable. there certainly were more people crowding the center floor than the past two years. Ron Tanner, vice president of the NASFT, said that although consumers remain cautious, they clearly are enjoying/including more specialty foods as part of their lifestyles.

Specialty foods include classics like cheese, chocolate, olive oil, pasta products, grains, sauces and condiments. Entrepreneurs, mom-and-pop operations and larger companies are constantly adding innovative products and ethnic flavors to the mix. They all hope their products will appear on store shelves in coming months.

Some of my favorite items:

  • A crisp dark green chip made from roasted seaweed was the surprise of the show for me. SeaSnax roasts seaweed snacks with pure olive oil and a pinch of sea salt, nothing artificial. It’s also gluten free and vegan. Packed in “grab and go” small bags, it’s perfect in a lunch box or for snacking on an airplane.the small bag contains only 16 calories. Jin Jun, the “chief eating officer” of the family-run SeaSnax company, touted the benefits of seaweed — selenium, magnesium, vitamin K and other good stuff — but the product sells itself with its great texture and flavor. Large roasted sheets and small bags available at: www.seasnax.com
  • Columbus Salumeria started producing artisan salami in San Francisco more than 90 years ago. I sampled slices from its newest products combining wine and salami. Sporting three distinct wine varietal flavors, the new Wine Salami offer new tastes for appetizer and antipasto plates. a cabernet sauvignon with a hint of juniper berries, a pinot noir accented with pink peppercorns, and my favorite, pinot Grigio, light, with a hint of lemon zest, round out the collection. Available at Super Target.
  • Olive and other oils from all over the globe oozed throughout Moscone Center, many with added spices and herbs. An exquisite organic Tea Seed Oil from Arette made from tea seeds features a high smoke point and impressive amounts of tea polyphenols (antioxidants). Available at www.amazon.com
  • B.R.Cohn, a well-known premium California wine company, made a big splash with superb flavored olive oils and vinegars. it was hard to choose a favorite from the astounding collection of wine vinegars. if you’re in the market for long-aged “tradizionale” balsamic vinegar, (thick and sweet) you don’t have to go to Italy. B.R.Cohn makes a 25-Year Balsamic Vinegar, an elegant finishing touch for fresh strawberries or ice cream. the company also produces grape-seed oil. its mild, nutty flavor would be perfect for stir-frying dishes. Available at www.brcohnoliveoil.com
  • When I lived in California surrounded by fruit trees and berry bushes, I often cooked my own fruit preserves based on my mom’s recipes. the commercially prepared products were way too sweet for me. a smiling woman at the Crofter Food booth beckoned with a shmear of blueberry spread on a cracker. Mmmm, delicious, a tangy, not-too-sweet preserve, just like mom used to make. This Canadian company produces 100 percent organic, sustainable products and the delicious spreads are available in El Paso at Sun Harvest Market.

Other items of interest at the show included sauces and condiments competing for hot, hotter and hottest flavors. Ghost Peppers (peppers from India that are 300 times hotter than a jalapeño) in sauces can send you to outer space. a yuzu-wasabi sauce (yuzu is a tart Asian citrus fruit) added a sweet, sour and hot finish/topping. Noodle lovers can enjoy their pasta made from yams, kelp, farro and spelt, in addition to old-fashioned flour and egg recipes.

And finally, a profusion of healthful and good-for-you beverages enticed buyers. Water looks like water except when it’s black water — an enhanced water product. a Canadian product, BlackWater Drink, is infused with fulvic acid (supposedly an antioxidant that fights and eliminates free radicals).

The list of ills it’s supposed to cure or prevent tops the claims of all the old-fashioned patent medicines. the water looks black and although there was no distinctive flavor, I’ll stick to my El Paso water from the tap, thank you.

Dallas Austin Prepares For Space Flight in 2013

The versatile film and music producer is set to become one of Virgin Galactic’s first passengers.

Music producer Dallas Austin recently booked a ticket on one of the first tourism flights into outer space. Austin, whose music collaborations range from TLC to Michael Jackson, announced via Twitter that he would be taking a sub-orbital flight in 2013.”Yes!!” he wrote. “Just got my confirmation to travel to space in 2013 thanx to Richard Branson!! I’m gonna see Earth!!”Although the concept of space tourism may sound absurd to some, awesome to many, and intangible to others, owner of Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson, announced last month his plans to introduce a commercial space flight program called Virgin Galactic. in addition to tourists, the program will also fly researchers and scientists limited by findings made on Earth. Each seat on the spaceline goes for $200,000 and thus far, a bit over 400 passengers have booked tickets.

Reds flanker Scott Higginbotham expecting physical battle from Cheetahs

TOUGH MAN: Reds flanker Scott Higginbotham is ready to step up against the South African challenge. Picture: Darren England Source: the Courier-Mail

MARAUDING flanker Scott Higginbotham is today chasing the same perfectionist polish the Reds are demanding as a team to de-claw the threat of South Africa's Cheetahs.

It’s rare that any footy team deals a record 50-point hiding and assesses as many areas for improvement as the Reds have for this 2.40pm clash at Suncorp Stadium.

That hard-marking mentality means the Reds are not puffing out their chests after beating a Melbourne Rebels team destined to finish last.

The superior Cheetahs have a tenacious hang-in quality and flanker Heinrich Brussow is at the Richie McCaw and David Pocock level when it comes to the breakdown.

"It was quite loose against the Rebels and we know we are in for tighter, more physical stuff from the Cheetahs, especially with Brussow there," Higginbotham warned.

While Higginbotham scored an excellent try against the Rebels, teammates and coaches didn’t let him forget he also blew one by spilling a pass with an open 40m run to the line.

"I copped a bit from the boys but I was more dirty on myself for the lack of concentration when I saw a lot of space in front of me," he confessed.

Chief schemer Will Genia is tipping Higginbotham to excel over this period, just as he did in 2010 when he built his Wallaby claims against the top South African sides.

"Higgers has had a massive impact of late. He’s built into the season just as we have as a team," Genia said.

Returning skipper James Horwill will be a welcome authority and composure in the tight forward play.

"the biggest challenge for us is the change of style after playing against four Australian sides. We need to be able to adapt on the run," Horwill said.

Coach Ewen McKenzie has spent plenty of training time dealing with the high kicking and box-kicking tactics that the Cheetahs will employ.

Securing the ball cleanly is priority No.1 in those situations.

And if the wilting of the big Cheetahs pack is exaggerated as expected by today’s hot, 30C conditions, flyhalf Quade Cooper will cause them extra grief.

He is a master at changing the point of attack with inside balls to the likes of roving winger Digby Ioane.

Starting wingers Ioane and Rod Davies are in famine but you sense that is about to change.

Off the bench, impact player Radike Samo is ready for a 20-minute burst to show what he can do.

Queensland University will play Sydney University at Ballymore tomorrow afternoon for the Australian Club Championship.

LinkedIn $2 Billion Valuation: Capital not needed

LinkedIn Corp., the professional networking site, now has a worth of $2 billion. This figure was arrived at after Tiger Global Management LLC, a hedge fund founded by Chase Coleman, paid $20 million for a stake, according to 2 unnamed people.

The deal worked out at $21.5 dollars per share for a stake of around 1% and apparently does not represent new investment, being from existing shareholders. The source of this has not yet been named as the sale has not been disclosed at this point. Private technology companies are currently under a lot of interest from hedge funds, private-equity firms and mutual-fund companies, eager to benefit when the companies go public, according to Ari Levy over on Bloomberg.

Tiger also recently invested in Zynga Game Network Inc., also a candidate for IPO. LinkedIn now has over 70 million members and Jeff Weiner, its CEO, said last month that it is dealing with inquiries from interested bankers although did not comment on a forthcoming IPO. LinkedIn already raised $76 million from investor funding such as Bain Capital Ventures in 2008 and Weiner commented that the money remains in the bank saying, “We don’t need the capital.” he also quoted both Sequoia Capital and Greylock Partners as other investors.

Coleman and LinkedIn have both so far declined to comment. for more on this go to Bloomberg.com. what are your thoughts on LinkedIn’s valuation of $2 billion? why not send us a comment.

A network of community leaders is hosting a public discussion Wednesday evening on how the San Jose police responds to calls for help from the family and friends of mentally ill people.

The event is co-hosted by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Association of Santa Clara Valley and Councilman Kansen Chu.

This discussion will kickstart a serious of monthly meetings on what the leaders consider “vital issues” to the Silicon Valley Community.

There will be one hour of presentation, and one hour of question and answers, and the aim to give the public an understanding of how police respond to calls for help when a mentally ill person is involved, and how the public can better assist police in placing a call for help.

In May 2009, a Vietnamese family called San Jose police for help after 27-year-old Daniel Pham sliced his brother’s throat with a knife. When police arrived, they ended up fatally shooting Pham, who had a history of mental illness.

Presenters will include: San Jose Police Chief Chris Moore; Pat Dwyer, law enforcement liaison for Santa Clara County; Teresa Jeglum and Geoff Sumner, San Jose Police Department Crisis Management Unit ; and Dr. Jorge Wong and Sarita Kohli of the behavioral and mental health programs at Asian Americans for Community Involvement.

The meeting runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at San Jose City Hall, 200 East Santa Clara Street in the West Wing 118-119. Translators in Vietnamese and Spanish will be provided. Parking at City Hall will be validated at the meeting, so please bring your ticket.
